Diagnose me

Comments

I say you have appendicitis. Run, don't walk, to a doctor. If it ruptures it could be life-threatening.
I thought this at first, but my pain is just under my ribs, around my waist, and the Internet tells me that the appendix is lower in the abdomen. However, I will definitely mention the possibility to my doctor (I was able to get an appointment for this afternoon). Thanks!

Intestinal obstruction?

Whatever it is, I hope it either goes away soon or that someone can treat you for it!

Ooh, that had not occurred to me! Not very glamorous, but I guess it would be better than appendicitis. If my doctor confirms the other's diagnosis today, I'll put it in the comments.
kidney stones? That's insane pain for a day or two, but it goes away all of a sudden.... and then you could have a kidney infection afterwards causing duller pain... easy to test with a urine sample..
Kidneys sit in the back behind the lowest ribs and a bit under.

Or ovaries?

the place you describe sounds like where liver and duodenum are, but you can't trust where the pain feels like it is... there's a lot of funny stuff going on with nerves servicing different areas and how you interpret the pain stimuli.

The pain in the shoulder could be something pushing up on your diaphragm. I had a hysterectomy where they left an airbubble inside my ventral cavity by mistake. It bubbled upwards, the way air does, and bothered somewhere over the liver and it gave me a lot of pain in the shoulder... they said that was typical, and meant nothing.

I hope you feel better soon.

I am back from seeing my regular doctor, and his diagnosis was vastly different from the urgent care doctor's. The urgent care doctor had diagnosed shingles, and he said that a rash should manifest itself on my back in the next day or so.

My regular doctor, however, was much more thorough in his palpation, and his verdict is costochondral separation. Apparently, ribs are connected by cartilage, and sometimes this cartilage can pop off during exaggerated movements.

I asked my doctor if perhaps the undulations we were doing in bellydance class on Wednesday could have caused this, and he said, "BINGO!" He did not say that I had to stop bellydancing, though (whew!). Instead he just prescribed Tylenol (apparently a cure-all) and said the injury should heal with time.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas ... I was glad that no one suggested shingles because I was really hoping that's not what it was. :)

Ah darn, I'm late for my diagnosis, I had already outlined a whole paragraph.

Anyway, I'm glad it wasn't anything serious :)

I'm curious as to what your diagnosis was, though ... spill it!
Hehe ok.

Well, I was going to say that he should order a blood test to know whether you were suffering from some kind of liver failure and maybe a ecography to see if there was any damage.

But I guess I was overreacting?. And... yes, I admit it: I have watched ER for a long time and I'm currently hooked with House MD. So those are my medical sources.

And also, I had to look up "shingles". I learned a new word today!.

It looks like I am too late as well!! I was going to say a pulled muscle:) Nothing fancy. I'm glad you have a diagnosis and are doing okay.

Staci

Hey, it's been forever since I heard from you! Pulled muscle was close. :) I am just glad it was a rib injury and not anything more serious. Don't you think incurring a bellydancing injury is sooo much sexier than developing shingles??
Your doctor beat me to it but I was going to say referred pain from a rib or your back,,,,too long sitting at the computer, and you neck in one position. Physiotherapy? I get the same pain...I have to remember to get up and walk around every hour or so.
Absolutely!! Way more sexy!:o) You have just confirmed my thoughts about Urgent Care docs:)

I'm glad it's nothing too serious and hope you're feeling better soon.

Shingles?!?! I've had shingles, and for me, it wasn't really anything like what you described...

Yeah, when I got home from the urgent care, I started looking online and just wasn't reading anything that sounded like what I was feeling. And then yesterday at work people were telling me about their shingles experiences, and I *really* started to get suspicious of the urgent care doc's diagnosis! So I'm glad I paid the extra money to go see my real doctor. Especially since now I don't have to cancel lunch with my college friends and all their babies this week for fear of giving the kids chicken pox. :)
I'm glad it wasn't shingles! My husband had that last year and even though he had a mild case and it was caught early enough to be controlled, a professor of mine was diagnosed with them and had a pretty painful experience, and then later it developed into a more serious neurological problem that left him temporarily paralyzed! So, glad it was figured out and fixable!
Thanks! I actually feel lots better now ... the pain got really bad on Tuesday morning and then went away after that. I have belly dance class tonight ... we'll see how I do. :)
I was thinking pulled muscle, as well-- glad that was all it was. I'll tell you what, though; I pulled a muscle in my back just recently (from lifting all the boxes) and it took forever to feel better. It was great seeing you tonight in class, BTW... Sorry if I was out-of-it a bit-- between the heat zapping my energy and work zapping my mental energy, I wasn't feeling the best... Look forward to seeing you next week-- I'm going to practice this weekend on how to be more "earthy"!
i'm sorry i'm just seeing this now, 4 days later. i had two guesses, mainly because the pain was associated with breathing. my first guess was chostachondritis, which is basically what your doctor said - an injury or swelling to the connective cartilage of your ribs.

unfortunately, i've been told that some doctors declare that whenever there's pain that seems to be musculo-skeletal in that area - it's often a fall-back, like "gastroentritis" is just "you have an upset tummy and i have no idea why"...

did the doctor do a chest x-ray? your symptoms sound an awful lot like pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the pleura, the tissue surrounding your lungs, protecting them from the ribs. they can get inflamed and everytime you breathe, it pushes against your ribs and hurts. it's not serious, usually goes away in a few days, and a chest x-ray should show if that's the problem.

(i'm not a doctor, but i've had both of these diagnoses)

your doctor's diagnosis does seem the most likely, given the belly-dancing. you should ask your instructor if she knows anyone who had a similar problem.
I've had pleurisy before, and this was different. The pain is pretty much gone now, though ... I was going to ask my instructor about it last night but she was surrounded by students and I had to get back home. I will ask her next week. :)
did the doctor tell you to use a heating pad before or after dance class? maybe that will help. good luck, i'm glad it wasn't too serious.
